Sun outside, artificial lighting and radiation from monitors inside. Constantly changing light conditions are often a big problem for people with prescription glasses. But where there is a problem, EssilorLuxottica comes with its most modern technological solution - Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™ self-tinting lenses! Why is it worth choosing them?

In the previous article, we talked about photochromic (self-tinting) glasses - these are glasses that change the color of their lenses depending on whether you are in direct sunlight or indoors. Without a doubt, this is the most convenient way of protecting and correcting vision in one.

How do self-tinting glasses work?

The self-tinting process of photochromic glasses is automatic and fast. When the glasses are exposed to sunlight, the photo-reactive chemicals in the lenses react to the ultraviolet radiation. This process causes the glass to become darker to protect the eyes from unwanted glare and the harmful effects of UV rays. When the surroundings are less illuminated again, for example when transitioning to an indoor environment, the glass will slowly return to its transparent state. Darkening takes about 30 seconds, then returning to a clear state takes about 5 minutes.

There are many types of self-tinting glasses on the market, but we always want to bring you the best. That is why on eyerim you can find self-tinting lenses from the global optical giant EssilorLuxottica called Transitions® Light Intelligent Lenses™. How are these glasses different? Let's take a look at it.

1) Transitions Signature GEN 8®

These adaptive glasses, already in the 8th generation, are designed for normal everyday wear. They are clear in the interior, but they darken when exposed to UV light. They provide 100% UV protection and are available in 2 colors: brown (increases contrast) and gray (neutral, supports correct color vision).

2) Transitions XTRActive®

If you are very sensitive to light or frequently exposed to bright light, the new generation Transitions XTRActive® glasses are designed for you. These are the darkest self-tinting glasses with extra protection against intense light, which are also suitable for drivers. They provide 100% protection against UV radiation and reliably filter up to 34% of blue-violet light indoors and up to 90% of blue-violet light outdoors. These glasses in the interior remain with a gentle protective tint, which, however, has no effect on your vision. The great news is that the transition from dark form back to clear is up to 35% faster than other lenses.

Testing on spectacle wearers has shown that in many situations – such as driving, strong daylight, time spent indoors in front of a screen or exposure to artificial light – users prefer the new generation of Transitions XTRActive lenses.

Frequently asked questions

1) How are Transitions different from regular clear lenses?

Your classic clear lenses do a great job of correcting your vision if you have a refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, or astigmatism). However, Transitions lenses go a step further by ensuring that your eyes are exposed to only the optimal amount of light, protecting your vision in all lighting conditions.

2) Do Transitions glasses block UV radiation and blue light?

Transitions lenses block up to 100% of harmful UV radiation that can cause eye damage, including corneal burns and retinal degeneration. They are also useful for filtering out distracting light reflections - thanks to their ability to darken in bright sunlight, they allow you to see better and reduce the reflection of light from the surface of water, snow, road or other surfaces. This means that your eyes will be less tired and you can concentrate on important activities.

The ability to filter blue light from digital devices is also a great bonus. Transitions Signature GEN 8 filter up to 20% of harmful blue-violet light in the clear state and even 85% in the darkened state. Transitions XTRActive filter up to 34% of blue-violet light indoors and up to 90% of blue-violet light outdoors.

3) Can I add Transitions lenses to any frame?

Transitions lenses are suitable for all frames from the eyerim range, so you can easily match the most modern eye care with your personal style.

4) Can I choose Transitions glasses even if I don't need diopters?

The great news is that you can enjoy the benefits of Transitions lens technology even when you don't need diopters. Simply choose any frame from the eyerim menu. When choosing glasses, choose "I want glasses without diopters" and in the next step "Self-tinting (photochromic) lenses".

  • Transitions Signature Gen8 are perfect for everyday life, and you can choose from 2 colors. They offer the best protection for your eyes from glare.

  • Transitions XTRActive, on the other hand, are ideal for those who spend a lot of time in the bright sun or in the car, where they activate and reduce glare no matter where you go.

5) Do I still need prescription sunglasses when I have one pair of Transitions?

It doesn't hurt to keep a pair of prescription sunglasses, as they are more suitable if you are sitting outside in the sun for a long time (for example on holiday). Self-tinting glasses with Transitions lenses are not necessarily a replacement for your sunglasses, but another option to make your life a little easier when transitioning between indoors and outdoors.
