Whether you're a beginner or an experienced contact lens wearer, be sure to pay attention. These 13 basic rules will help you avoid potential problems and ensure that your eyes stay healthy and your contact lenses remain functional and comfortable.

1) Don't sleep with contact lenses unless your eye care professional has approved it

Despite the fact that sometimes you don't want to put your contacts away in the evening, doctors warn against leaving your contacts in your eyes 24 hours a day or while you sleep. This method of wearing is only possible with certain types of lenses, and even with these, prolonged wear should be discussed with your eye doctor.

2) Never wear lenses longer than recommended for the specific type

Replace monthly lenses after a month, daily lenses every day! Remember that contact lenses must not be used for longer than recommended by the manufacturer and your eye care professional, even if the contact lens itself is still comfortable after that time.

3) Never use tap water on the contact lens or on the case

Tap water can contain microorganisms that can damage lenses or cause eye infections. Always use a sterile solution designed for cleaning and storing lenses. Tap water also does not have the optimal pH and osmotic pressure for contact lenses, which can cause deformation or damage.

4) Do not pour the fresh solution into old one

Such overfilling can lead to bacterial contamination and reduce the effectiveness of the solution. The old solution may be weakened and may have a disturbed chemical balance, negatively affecting the cleaning and disinfection of the lenses. Therefore, always discard the used solution after lens insertion and then use a new solution.

5) Do not use contact lenses if you have irritated eyes

If your eyes are red, itchy or irritated, you should take a break from lenses for a while. Then consult your eye specialist and if the condition worsens, don't delay seeing a doctor!

6) Don't throw your lenses down the toilet or sink

Contact lenses should not be disposed of in the toilet or sink as they can cause pollution of water sources and are harmful to the environment. Simply dispose of used lenses in the bin. Some brands even offer recycling programs for contact lenses.

7) Never change the type of solution without consulting an eye care professional

Contact lens solutions vary in composition and not all are suitable for every type of lens. Changing the solution without consulting an eye specialist can cause irritation, allergic reaction or damage to the lenses themselves.

8) Do not share contact lenses with other people

Sharing contact lenses with other people can significantly increase the risk of transmitting infections and eye diseases. Contact lenses should always be individual and personal, as each eye is unique and has different needs.

9) Don't have too long nails when putting contact lenses on

Perhaps unpleasant news for some ladies, but long nails can damage contact lenses when handling them and can also cause damage to the eye itself. It's important to keep your nails clean and manicured when handling contact lenses to avoid potential complications.

10) Do not allow makeup or creams to come into contact with the lenses

Makeup and contact lenses go together quite well. However, the key to success is caution!  Put your contact lenses in before applying makeup and take them out before removing makeup. Of course, never forget to wash your hands thoroughly before handling your lenses.

11) Avoid water activities or spas

Contact lenses should never be exposed to water (fresh or sea) or excessive heat. It is therefore recommended to skip activities such as swimming, showering, bathing, diving, steam bath or sauna when wearing contact lenses. Contact with water can cause the lenses to absorb bacteria and other harmful substances that can cause infections or eye irritation. Excessive heat and steam in saunas or spas can damage the lenses or change their shape.

12) Do not wear contact lenses after the expiration date

After the expiration date, lenses can lose their properties such as flexibility, oxygen permeability, and ability to retain moisture. Wearing lenses after the expiration date can therefore lead to eye irritation and an increased risk of infections.

13) When travelling, remember to pack an extra pair of contact lenses

Hand on heart - have you never lost your contact lenses before? It can be challenging to find replacement lenses when travelling, especially with specific prescriptions. That's why it's important to carry an extra pair with you to be prepared for loss, damage or unexpected situations.
